A funny thing, promising laminate floor before/after photos before (not after) finding the camera’s uploading ingredients.
Life before laminate flooring
It sucked, obviously. For 70 days I stayed as far from that sickening shag as possible. Never touched it, never sat on it, never let less than a full inch of protective piggy-wear come between me and it. It’s no wonder I’ve so few before photos.

Living room laminate step 1 – annihilate carpet.

Lamination preparation step 2 – clean up & level the sub-floor

Next, we laminate! (Step 3)

Before & after?

Only after? Now we’ve finished with the scary shag – two more laminate flooring pics.

“Wee wee wee,“ all the way home. So that’s the pictoral story of how the pigs, not the baddies, huffed & puffed & tore the shag to shreds. As for the laminate – life’s being unpacked and upturned on top of it. Mess and disorganization on our terms – that’s the sweetest part about having a floor. Oh, and Swiffering. And traveling, top speed, across it in your socks.
Hey, you want a s'more? Some more of what?

Fabulous job…Love the last pic with the piggies disappearing appropriately into the metaphorical sunset.
Haha that’s deep! Porcine intelligence, can’t fault it.
Those little piggies take no prisoners. Nice colour, that shag had to go…
Hi Lami! Haha – they certainly do not. Hope the carpet makes some new friends at its next home in the landfill….
And this little piggy was roasted for Sunday dinner.
I am waiting to see how it gets decorated….. nice floor though.
Good idea – always on the menu!
You know what rhymes with decoration? Imagination. As in – keep using it for another few months!
The before and afters make me weep a little bit. SUCH an improvement!
There’s no crying in
baseballbefore/after-thrall!I’m kinda seriously in love with it. Like I can’t stop saying “Hi floor! I love you!”…. Will this go away soon?
Love it! The wide planks look so nice! Great job!
Thanks Brittney! Perhaps it’s one of those funny tricks of the eye, but narrow spaces like the hallway look so much wider now. Wonder how this would compare vs. the normal-sized planks?
That carpet was beyond awful. I imagine your place even smelled better once it was gone. The laminate is beautiful –and level!
It does smell better! No amount of airing or vacuuming changed that awful musty did-something-die-on-this-carpet smell – having seen what was under the carpet, no surprise! I wonder if the laminate underlay will turn into lime green dust in 40 years?
I’m waiting for the video. The one we were promised. You know, the Tom Cruise sock slide one…
Oh I’m well aware of what was promised! It’s only day 80 or something… have to save some of the good stuff for later.
It’s starting to look like a real place! Great job. (More piggies, please. haha)
It feels like a real place! The couch is in one piece – available for sitting on! Maybe now our friends will start returning our calls when we invite them for dinner… “It’s safe now! Not a punishment anymore!”
Thanks Heather!
Looks great! HUGE improvement over the carpet!
Love all the grain in the laminate that you selected.
Kelly
There’s probably a ‘laminate for dummies’ guide I missed – in some places we repeated the grain side-by-side, but it’s not like the box comes with much choice, only 3 or 4 patterns total. Oh well, probably something only its OCD-installers will notice. Thanks Kelly!
Way to go on the remodel. The final pictures look very good compared to the carpet.
Thanks! I’m in pig heaven – heh.
What a dramatic change!
Ever so slightly! Thanks Amy!
Well done, Lauren and Paolo! Bravo!!
I agree with whoever pointed out the awesomeness of the wide planks. Love it. Looks like you also did a great job matching up the lines of the planks to adjoining rooms that will have a thredhold in the doorway. Totall pro looking!
BTW- Just read your green cleaning post (noticed the comments were closed on it though). I’ve been trying to phase out the chemical cleaners and introduce green stuff as well thanks to YHL (been a devoted reader for about 12 months now but I’ve read every single post they’ve ever made… what? I was bored!). My favorite new find is Method laundry detergent. Probably still has some not-so-great stuff in it but its better than Tide! Its super concentrated and comes in a tiny squirt bottle. Its great for small spaces (ahem, like 1 bedroom apartments?) since it takes up less space than a bottle of wine. Smells great too!
I love, love, love Method bathroom scrub. Smells heavenly. I use most of the Method stuff. However, I’m intrigued by Lauren’s dishwasher soap.
Smells of what tastiness, exactly? Sorry – somehow I disabled the comments on today’s post – oooops! Fixed now (& fully caffeinated, too!) Bon weekend, my friend!
Oh man, smells like a spa! It’s freaking amazing.
Thanks Claire! The doorway alignment required more math than I’d ever care to play with… awards go to P for perfection. Still no doorway-reducer-thingy though… maybe a ‘gaping void’ will become a trend?
Yes – sorry about the closed comments – don’t know what I did to turn them off. It’s fixed now! (And guilty as charged with the background reading on YHL!) Less space than a bottle of wine – yes! – those are measurements I understand. That’s 2 votes for Method now!!
Wow I could not have had more typos in my comment. Oy.
Must try the Method bathroom scrub now too! I bought some shower cleaner (you know, the stuff you’re supposed to spray after every shower) in the Ylang Ylang scent and I am NOT a fan. Should have guessed that when I am still standing in my shower spraying it so it gets mixed in with the steam and goes straight up my nostrils that it would be a little obnoxious. I love the fresh scent of my laundry soap though!
Haha I hate when I submit comments with typos and I want to write back & say “wait! just kidding! I do know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’… that doesn’t count!!”
Apparently the Method stuff lives at Whole Foods so that’s where I plan to track it down. Ylang Ylang is a pain to say and a nasty scent as well. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
