We went back on forth on things – Paolo wanted a dark bathroom floor and I wanted a lighter one. More importantly, we agreed the walls couldn’t be a colour – otherwise we’d end up completing the third swatch in our accidental Easter basket. Actually – left shiny turquoise, it’s a pretty close match as-is.

Hmm. We bought a new white toilet and an above-mount sink. The new fixtures waiting in the box are shiny, shiny, shiny. Really, starting with a bathroom like ours… anything would be an improvement. Recall that I’ve never once touched that bathroom floor with bare feet. Even when I knew it was clean. Still no.
I started going through photos I liked – other small bathrooms like ours – and soon had a pattern. Then I cross-referenced these photos with whatever promised to make the small bathroom seem bigger. (Dull, but vital for dumb-dumbs!) The new toilet alone was 4” narrower on both sides of the tank! Room at least for two bush babies. We were already winning.
Having already cheated at floor-tile-colour-selection, I decided to play with Olioboard and quickly came up with this: (click for bigger version)

A wooden vanity, stained very dark or black. Beige floor tile, white walls, and beige towels with turquoise accents. Having little to no design aesthetic there’s no way I can write accents without feeling like a total wanker. Accents.
I don’t need to ask what you think because you tell me anyway.

Hey, you want a s'more? Some more of what?

You’re right, we will tell you anyway.
I LOVE it! And P.S., we’ve been using those exact low-flow toilets in our flips and I’m kind of obsessed with them.
Haha, yup, I have no doubts!! And thanks for the feedback with enthusiastic caps — that’s always a good sign.
Apparently our old 1970s toilet used something like 8 gallons per flush?! I can hardly believe it but that’s what the Home Depot sign said. The new one is 1.26. Yea… ok… now I’m obsessed too!!
I like Paolo’s choice for tile. I have a thing for dark floors though. I used 2′x2′ black tile in our bathroom, with black grout. Could also be that I hate beige and it’s many many variances in shade and it’s total asshattery of matching shade to shade drives me crazy. Black tile made it an easy choice, I could paint the walls any shade of beige I wanted. Except that baby poop shade, that was just a no-no.
Huh, never would have thought about black tile. I need to go to Design For Dummies school — I thought the hardest part would be the DIY work, not choosing the pieces! It’s my least favourite part so far.
Mind if I borrow ‘asshattery’?
I’m with Karrie on the dark floor tile…and the poop-colored-paint-free zone. I still think you could go with a darker shade of either your yellow or minty-mint, but if you must have white, just make it a nice warm white.
RE the low water usage toilets: after having an older 1.5 gal. model plug up a couple times (I won’t go into details, but a six-year-old and a lot of TP was involved) I went with a Kohler with the Class 5 flush on my guest bath remodel. Well worth the extra bucks and no plunger problems since, as advertised: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGbxQaI7vpo
Plus, it’s made in Wisconsin, which is pretty close to Canada.
Permission granted. Hehe.
Here’s a few pics of our floor. I’d take you a couple better ones but then I’d be forced to clean the bathroom. http://sweethappens.blogspot.com/p/house-pictures.html
Also, I tried to hit reply and your nasty little site binged at me and told me to take my remarks and shove them…. okay it just said something about not finding the commentformid div. Boo.
