We dragged home an Ikea Hemnes 6-drawer chest awhile ago, specifically choosing the 100% wood option lest we decide to paint it. (Why would I have Ikea furniture in this apartment if I didn’t paint it? That would mean I’d use free time to read or engage in intellectually stimulating hobbies. And who would want to do that when you could swear at Sweden instead?)

Anyway, Hemnes is great – really like it – but not sure about his livery. He’s shacking up with these guys:

paint ikea hemnes 1 To hack or not to hack? Hemnes awaits word.

I think I’d made my mind up on the ride home that Hemnes was getting a paint job. Paolo likes it as is – but he knows nothing of its potential.

A natural reflex – paint it white – has misfired this time. We have enough white. What’s the answer? Paint – or just different knobs or handles?

Hey, you want a s'more? Some more of what?

  1. With the colors you have in that room, grey or turquoise would look great, or even a pop of red. I don’t know what your bedding looks like though. I would definitely paint and get maybe some white ceramic knobs are something. Do you guys have Anthropologie up there? Or Hobby Lobby? Both have great knobs (with Hobby Lobby being significantly cheaper).

    • Ooh, good idea!! We’ve just received Anthropologie about 6 months or so ago — who knew heaven had so many dollar signs?

  2. That blue is pretty, and I love those yellow knobs to tie back in with the other yellows in the room. I guess I’ll call them teardrop knobs, and I think I may steal that idea for the dresser I’ll be redoing soon.

  3. Paint and new hardware!

  4. Oh but white looks SOOOO good in yellow bedrooms! I’ve always wanted one of each of the Hemnes in the 6-drawer and the 8-drawer, but then I inherited one of these 200lb Vilas things from my great grandfather and now I have no room. What is a girl to do! http://images.craigslist.org/5W65X45R23k13m43o2bbj68f14d8cd1771409.jpg

  5. I’m with Karrie- paint AND new hardware! I like the suggestion of grey. Perhaps with a darker grey knob (spraypaint the current ones?) or something colorful.

Also as suggested above, Anthropologie *does* have great knobs. Check out their clearance room for a deal. I’ve often seen some that are marked down to a semi-reasonable price.

  6. Hey! Glad you found my painted Hemnes dresser. For what it’s worth, it was totally worth the time to paint. I used an oil based primer, so you wouldn’t have to worry about sanding either.

Those knobs are from anthropologie (the melon pulls) but you can definitely find a cheaper knob with that same color from hobby lobby. There are so many darn drawers on the dresser – they add up.

    Cheers!

    • Hi Sania! Yes – thank you! A head-over-heels encounter. Glad to know their proper name – melon pulls. Guess saggy udder pulls will never take off. Thanks again — your Hemnes will soon have a soulmate in Vancouver.
